Terms of Service

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of HouseCents. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these Terms.
1. The service
HouseCents is a web-based family expense tracker that lets households record monthly bills, everyday purchases, and related insights. Features may change as we improve the product.
2. Accounts and eligibility
You must provide accurate account information and keep your password confidential. You are responsible for activity on your account. HouseCents is intended for users 18 years or older (or the age of majority where you live). One person should not create accounts solely to evade payment or household limits.
3. Subscriptions, trial, and billing
HouseCents is offered on a subscription basis at $2 per month or $12 per year (prices may change with notice), with a 14-day free trial unless we state otherwise. You can create an account and use the service during the trial without entering a payment method. When the trial ends, you must subscribe through Stripe (or join a household that already has an active plan) to keep using the service. We do not automatically charge a card you never provided. After you subscribe, yearly plans are billed once per year and monthly plans once per month until you cancel. Cancel anytime in Settings → Manage billing. Access continues through the end of the current paid period. Paid fees are final and non-refundable to the maximum extent permitted by law, including unused time and plan changes, except where a law requires otherwise. One subscription covers one household (up to five members). Invited members do not pay separately while they remain in that household. If you leave a household and do not have your own trial or paid plan, you must subscribe or join another entitled household to keep using the service.
4. Households and shared data
You may create a household and invite others with an invite code. A person can belong to only one household at a time. Joining another household leaves the previous one. Household members can see shared bills, purchases, and related household data. Do not share invite codes publicly. The household owner can remove members. Leaving or being removed does not automatically cancel a Stripe subscription you personally started; cancel that in Manage billing. Access for invited members depends on the household still having an active trial, paid plan, or approved early-access status.
5. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Misuse the service, attempt unauthorized access, or disrupt operations
- Upload unlawful, harmful, or abusive content
- Use HouseCents to violate any law or third-party rights
- Resell or scrape the service without permission
We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.
6. Your data
You retain ownership of the expense and household data you enter. You grant us a limited license to host, process, and display that data solely to operate HouseCents for you and your household. Our Privacy Policy describes how we handle personal information.
7. Not financial advice
HouseCents is a tracking and organization tool only. It is not financial, tax, investment, accounting, or legal advice. You are solely responsible for decisions you make based on information in the app.
8. Availability and changes
We aim for reliable service but do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features with reasonable notice when practical. Planned maintenance or outages of third-party providers may affect access.
9. Disclaimers
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT, TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.
10. Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, HOUSECENTS AND ITS OPERATORS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNTS YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR $50 IF YOU HAVE NOT PAID.
11. Termination
You may stop using the service at any time. Canceling a subscription (Settings → Manage billing) stops future charges; you keep access until the trial or paid period ends. Deleting an account is a separate request to support.housecents@gmail.com; we will delete or anonymize personal data within a reasonable period except records we must keep for legal, security, or billing reasons. Canceling does not automatically delete your data. We may suspend or terminate access for violation of these Terms, non-payment, abuse of invites, or to protect the service or other users. Survival: disclaimers and liability limits remain after termination.
12. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which the operator resides, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, unless mandatory consumer protections in your location require otherwise.
13. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. We will revise the “Last updated” date and, for material changes, provide additional notice when appropriate. Continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
